While allegedly attempting to break into a residence in the Ottertail mobile home court, 18-year-old Koal Timothy Shamp was shot in the hip by the resident of the home.

“I know these people and why they’re trying to break in,” said Brandt in an interview Thursday, referring to the two suspects as "punk thug criminals." Brandt believes they were "trying to come in and hurt me bad."

It will be interesting to see if this gets prosecuted (the shooting, not the break-in). There is no castle law in MN and you can't shoot someone in defense of your property. The guy was smart to mention he feared for his personal safety (hurt me real bad...) but that would be tested if taken to court. In Otter tail Co. Maybe the sheriff won't go there since common sense still reigns in the rural areas as regards guns and self defense. In Hennepin they probably would.
You can use lethal force to prevent the commission of a felony in your place of abode. Unless he faked the break-in evidence, he should(hopefully) be safe, legally.
Funny how one sided this article is. I am the mother & they neglected to report that Mr. Brandt got my 18 year old son VERY intoxicated drinking all day with him & invited them back over later to get high with him. It's very sad how ALL the details were NOT obtained before publishing the article. Unfortunately this happens to many people who appear in out media. My son's spin was barley missed. I held his hand while they dug the bullet out, then imeadiatly transported him to jail with no further medical treatment given, as he sat in there for 62 days. Now age 21 and maturing. He has permanent damage to his back, outstanding ambulance & hospital bills, due from injury and the man who got him drunk AND INVITED HIM BACK just to shoot him got NOTHING. My son is learning from his mistakes and growing from them however Mr. Brandt is still creating legal issues in Ottertail County. Tell me Where is the justice system for the ones they allow to hurt our children. May god bless the true victims. Thank you for hearing me.
