Armed Invasion

May 27, 2008

http://www.northlandsnewscenter.com/news/local/19295109.html

Duluth police are investigating another armed home invasion in the Central Hillside.

Fairly standard home invasion.
Within a short time authorities stopped a vehicle and found a man hiding in the backseat.

The man matched the description of the intruder and a gun, registered in his name was found in his possession.

I'm glad he was caught. I'd be interested to know how the gun was registered in the thug's name, when Minnesota has no form of gun registration.

Victims Shaken Over Home Invasion: Update

04/22/2008

http://www.wdio.com/article/stories/S421207.shtml?cat=10335
Update to this story.
The robbery happened around 4:45 p.m. at 1226 Missouri Avenue. Five college students were home when three suspects came in an unlocked door, carrying a gun. One of the victims jumped out of a window, while the rest were held at gunpoint.

That's about the level of detail available for the previous article.
"We're all a little bit shocked," said Alex Stein, another student held at gunpoint. "You don't think someone is going to walk into your kitchen and point a gun to your head and tell you to get on the ground."

The suspects made off with thousands of dollars worth of computers, iPods and an Xbox. No one was hurt, but even police are perplexed by the random attack.

"This is a very nice, quiet neighborhood," said Lt. Steve Stracek. "We have very few problems."

It can happen anywhere. Lock your doors and take care of yourselves.

Armed Home Invasion in Duluth

April 21, 2008

http://www.northlandsnewscenter.com/news/local/17999074.html

Few details are availablee:
There was a home invasion armed robbery in Duluth.

Police say three men entered an unlocked door of a home at 1226 Missouri Avenue, near UMD.

It happened at about 5 Monday evening.

People living inside the home say the men pointed a gun at them.

Note the part I highlighted. I sometimes feel like a nut job complaining when others leave the doors unlocked. Every time I see a story like this, I feel vindicated.

However, police say their biggest concern isn't so much robberies, but home invasions.

Police say there have been at least five home invasions since September.

How did I miss two?

Even though this is a larger number than usual, police are saying that each one of the victims was targeted for a specific reason by the suspect.

"It's significant we had a number of them where it jumps out at me and I do want to clarify again that these are not random events," said Sgt. Bob Shene with the Duluth Police Department.

How wonderfully equivocating. Of course they're not random. "They look rich" eliminates the random factor. Victims are cased, not drawn from a hat.

Police say it is important to be careful where you put a hide–a–key.
Don't put it in a place where it can be easily found.

Write down the serial numbers of all the expensive items in your home.
This will help police find them if they ever get stolen.

And if you are going to be out of town, put automatic timers on your lights and have your neighbors collect your mail.

Police investigate home burglary

Wednesday, December 05, 2007

Duluth police are investigating a home invasion burglary reported Wednesday morning....

I redacted the address because I think it's terribly irresponsible to publish a victim's private information.
Three men forced their way into the residence that was shared by three college students and one high school student, police said.

Fortunately,

No one was injured....

Duluth home invasion: St. Thomas student charged

September 12, 2007

http://www.startribune.com/467/story/1419412.html

A University of St. Thomas student and Army National Guard member has been charged with a home invasion that terrified a Duluth boy and his mother.

David E. Schiller, 19, of St. Paul studied robberies, burglary and blood forensics, and then staked out the Duluth home for 10 to 15 days before breaking in on Aug. 30, according to a complaint charging him with first-degree burglary and kidnapping.

Choir boys trying something new, or career criminals (un)lucky enough not to have been shot, yet?

That third man had driven Schilling to other home invasions and had told Schilling that the family kept money in a safe in their home, the complaint says.
