August 26, 2011

A burglary suspect apparently didn’t notice that the Minnesota house he was targeting had a sheriff’s squad car parked outside.

Winona County Sheriff Dave Brand says his wife called him Thursday evening to say someone was trying to break into their Lewiston home.

Brand says he rushed home and found a man reaching through a broken glass door trying to unlatch the door.

Saturday, August 13, 2011

Two people broke into a rural Winona County house early Saturday but were chased off by an armed homeowner.
The owner of a house along County Road 17 south of Witoka, Minn. awoke about 3 a.m. to the sound of rapping, possibly someone knocking on a door, Brand said. Then he heard glass breaking, got up, and grabbed a .22 handgun he kept by the bed.
The homeowner encountered the intruders, yelled at them, then fired two shots from the handgun, Brand said. The intruders left the house and drove away, and the homeowner called 911.

Not quite a home invasion, but it was close.
An 18-year-old man tried to break into a Winona apartment Wednesday night, threatened to kill the occupant and fled when officers arrived, police said.

Death threats and burglary, and he wanted recognizance? It's possible there's a reason his life is the way it is.

Two masked men wielding golf clubs as weapons broke into a home on the 850 block of West Fifth Street early Tuesday morning, assaulting at least two occupants inside.

Police said that the incident was absolutely not random.

"Not random" doesn't mean the victim's were criminals.

3 implicated in home invasion

Tuesday, April 08, 2008

http://www.winonadailynews.com/articles/2008/04/08/news/06home3.txt

Three men face possible burglary and assault charges after a home invasion early Saturday, police said.

This part is interesting reporting:
The men’s names are being withheld until criminal charges are filed.

According to the police report, officers were dispatched to [address redacted] on a report of an assault at 2 a.m. Saturday.

Why are the thugs' identities protected, while the victim's address isn't?
Although the older brother was not taken into custody, based on an interview with investigators over the phone, he was also referred for charges.

Two men arrested, with a third facing charges. I'm glad they were caught immediately.

Update to this story.

A Stewartville, Minn., man admitted his involvement in a home invasion last May and was convicted of burglary and assault in Winona County District Court on Monday.

One down, two to go.

Warrants have been issued for Lindsey’s accomplices: Lennie Dwayne Brooks, 22, and Dennis Lee Richardson Jr., 23.

Lindsey will be sentenced April 29.

Let's hope he turns his friends in, in exchange for a shorter sentence.
Let's also hope he goes away for a long time.

Masked gunmen rob Winona home

February 26, 2008

http://www.winonadailynews.com/articles/2008/02/26/news/01lead.txt

Two men donning black masks and dark clothing brandished a handgun while stealing several electronic items from a Winona home on Harriet Street on Sunday night, police said.

It's a good thing no one was hurt. Once the intruders are in your home, you lose control over who gets hurt.
According to the police report, officers were called at about 7:50 p.m. to the 400 block of Harriet Street on a report of a robbery. Two men “basically just walked in” and stole two cell phones, two laptops, an Xbox game console and a small amount of marijuana, Bostrack said.

Please, please lock your doors!

And, of course, it wasn't "random".
Although Bostrack stressed the incident is “strongly believed” not to be random, he said, the occupants told police they didn’t know who the suspects were.

What the police don't seem to realize, or at least, don't want to admit, is that very few home invasions are random. These thugs apparently knew there were electronics worth taking. Even if there was no other connection, that keeps it from being considered a random attack.

Des Moines man gets six years for home invasion

Thursday, January 31, 2008

http://www.winonadailynews.com/articles/2008/01/31/news/00lead.txt

A Des Moines, Iowa, man convicted of invading a Winona apartment last May was sentenced Wednesday to six years in prison for burglary and assault with a dangerous weapon.

Kirk Cordell Glann, 23, was given 273 days credit for time served since he was arrested shortly after the break-in. He will be eligible for parole in four years. As part of a plea agreement, prosecutors dropped 17 other charges of assault, robbery and kidnapping.

Six years is better than nothing. I hope he learns his lesson, instead of polishing his "craft" like so many do in prison.

Update:
After reviewing our older posts, I noticed we don't have this one.

Here are more details:
According to testimony given Nov. 1, Glann and an accomplice, Jacob Paul Semling, 21, entered an apartment near West King and Cummings streets on May 1, 2007, wielding a pellet gun and a bike chain as weapons. Both testified they intended to steal drugs or money.

Once inside, one of six occupants was hit with the chain and a struggle ensued, according to the criminal complaint. Glann and Semling fled but were apprehended by police about a block away.

Another man faces charges in May home invasion

October 30, 2007

http://www.winonadailynews.com/articles/2007/10/30/news/05home.txt

Three 22-year-old Rochester men could face going to prison for almost as many years as they’ve been alive if convicted for their roles in the May 16 home invasion of another man more than three times older than them.

Charges filed within the past week accuse two of them of barging into a Winona home, tying up and beating the man and stealing nearly $5,000. The third is still awaiting charges.

<--snip-->

According to Lindsey’s criminal complaint, the three men forced their way inside a home in the 600 block of West Fifth Street after asking to use the phone May 16. Once inside, they pistol-whipped the

69-year-old homeowner and duct-taped him to a chair, court documents said. The man suffered broken bones in his face, a broken nose and bleeding on his brain.

Lindsey, Brooks and Doughboy allegedly made off with the resident’s wallet, $800 cash and a safe containing $4,000 in commemorative state quarters.

Two Louisiana men and a woman were charged Monday for an April home invasion robbery on Mankato Avenue, and arrest warrants were issued for the suspects, who police say fled to Louisiana.

Two of the suspects are brothers with a violent past whose own parents are afraid of them, according to police.
