A St. Louis Park man was wounded by gunfire Thursday afternoon after returning home and possibly interrupting a burglary.

Eric "Rick" Zahniser, 58, an accountant who works out of his Cedar Lake Road home, encountered a stranger about 2:15 p.m. when he was shot. He was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, where he was in critical condition, authorities said.

Rash of bold burglaries plagues west Metro

09/24/2008

Posted unedited.
An investigation into a rash of bold Hopkins burglaries in August has substantially grown, and is now affecting several nearby cities in the west Metro, according to police.

At least 25 homeowners in Hopkins have reportedly awoke in the middle of the night after hearing noises and are then threatened with a knife.

Detective James Neimackl said there's reason for concern: The crimes have spread and authorities believe they are all related.

"We do believe they are related in all the cities: Minnetonka, Eden Prairie, St. Louis Park, and some in Minneapolis," he said.

Update to this story.

A male known to the female victim entered the female victim's residence by breaking a window and entering without her permission. Once inside, the defendant broke numerous items of furniture and electronics. The defendant also assaulted the female victim while he was in the home. The suspect was arrested and charged with First Degree Burglary.

Is a home invasion more or less horrible when you know the thug?

Saint Louis Park PIMA Update

I contacted the St. Louis Park Police Department crime analyst regarding the PIMA case posted here.

It happened at an apartment building and the suspect was arrested. The suspect entered an unlocked apartment unit that was occupied by two tenants. When the suspect saw the tenants, he fled. The tenants called 911. Officers arrived, observed the suspect, chased him and arrested him. The suspect discarded tools on the stairs during the chase and at the time he was arrested, he had a backpack with two DVD players in it that apparently were taken from a locked storage locker. Suspect was arrested and charged with First Degree Burglary.

This is the best possible result from a hot burglary. He didn't hurt anyone. He ran away. He got arrested.

Please lock your doors. This could have been much worse.
