Update to this story.

A Rochester man accused of breaking into a Winona home and pistol-whipping the owner failed to make his court appearance Wednesday morning.

Judge Jeffrey Thompson issued a warrant to apprehend and hold Lennie Dwayne Brooks for a future court date that has yet to be set. Thompson made the order about 45 minutes after Brooks was scheduled to appear, citing the court had not received a good reason for his absence.

Why is a vicious thug allowed to be out on bail?

According to Minnesota court databases, Brooks was sentenced Friday in Olmsted County District Court to five years and eight months in prison for selling cocaine. He is set to serve that time in the St. Cloud state prison but is currently in Olmsted County Jail.

I guess he didn't learn his lesson after being caught for the violent home invasion.

Des Moines man gets six years for home invasion

A Des Moines, Iowa, man convicted of invading a Winona apartment last May was sentenced Wednesday to six years in prison for burglary and assault with a dangerous weapon.

Kirk Cordell Glann, 23, was given 273 days credit for time served since he was arrested shortly after the break-in. He will be eligible for parole in four years. As part of a plea agreement, prosecutors dropped 17 other charges of assault, robbery and kidnapping.

Six years is better than nothing. I hope he learns his lesson, instead of polishing his "craft" like so many do in prison.

After reviewing our older posts, I noticed we don't have this one.

Here are more details:

According to testimony given Nov. 1, Glann and an accomplice, Jacob Paul Semling, 21, entered an apartment near West King and Cummings streets on May 1, 2007, wielding a pellet gun and a bike chain as weapons. Both testified they intended to steal drugs or money.

Once inside, one of six occupants was hit with the chain and a struggle ensued, according to the criminal complaint. Glann and Semling fled but were apprehended by police about a block away.

Two men arrested by Robbinsdale Police Saturday, Jan. 26, for suspected murder were released from jail shortly before 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28. But earlier that day, Robbinsdale Police arrested two other men in connection with the same case.

I won't draw any conclusions from this, but it does appear...interesting.

I'd call a student's dorm room their home for the school year:

Police said a University of Minnesota student was the victim of an armed robbery. Police added that they do not believe this to be a random attack.

The victim invited three acquaintances into his room and one of the suspects displayed a handgun. The victim was threatened and robbed and the suspects fled the room.

The victim was not injured.
...

It'll be interesting to see if the suspects are students or not and what, if anything, the officials say about the U of M being a weapons free environment....and whether the perps knew about this rule.

Edit: After finding another story on it at here, it's clear that this is criminal-on-criminal. The "victim," Grittner, was selling drugs to the perps, not exactly minding his own business at home. I apologize...but really am interested in any new perspectives on "weapons free zones."

Rochester man pleads guilty to Elgin home invasion

I was going to post this as an update, but I realized I didn't have the original story.

Alejandro Augirre Aguilar admitted Monday that he entered an Elgin home and pushed a woman inside.

The 23-year-old Rochester man told Judge James Fabian that he took items from the home so he could get food for his family.

A long time is deserved.

Under terms of the plea agreement, he faces a 41-month term for the offense last June.

He was charged with one count of first-degree burglary, one count of first-degree aggravated robbery and a misdemeanor count of fifth-degree assault. He was accused of entering a home in rural Elgin at about 4:30 p.m. June 7. Two women were in the house.

Less than four years for a home invasion. Anyone who lives in the Elgin area should lodge a complaint with the local prosecutor.

Saint Louis Park PIMA Update

I contacted the St. Louis Park Police Department crime analyst regarding the PIMA case posted here.

It happened at an apartment building and the suspect was arrested. The suspect entered an unlocked apartment unit that was occupied by two tenants. When the suspect saw the tenants, he fled. The tenants called 911. Officers arrived, observed the suspect, chased him and arrested him. The suspect discarded tools on the stairs during the chase and at the time he was arrested, he had a backpack with two DVD players in it that apparently were taken from a locked storage locker. Suspect was arrested and charged with First Degree Burglary.

This is the best possible result from a hot burglary. He didn't hurt anyone. He ran away. He got arrested.

Please lock your doors. This could have been much worse.

Robbinsdale police arrested two men on suspicion of murder Saturday, and they were being held in the Hennepin County jail.

Police would not confirm whether the men are suspects in a New Year's Day home invasion in which Jamis Marks, 28, was shot to death, but one was named a person of interest in an earlier search warrant connected to the case.

I will be interesting to see how much the crime rate in Robbinsdale drops with these two thugs in jail.

I spoke with the records supervisor of Lakeville's PD and the home owner reported that some one entered the home while they were at home and took a woman's purse from the kitchen table. The homeowner did not encounter the intruder. There is no record of forced entry so the PD assumes the door was left unlocked.

Keep your doors locked for goodness sake.

According to the Lakeville PD, the victims refused to cooperate after the initial report. They believe that the robbery may have been related to exchange of illegal contraband, i.e. criminal on criminal robbery. This doesn't fall into what we consider home invasions or hot burglaries. Robbinsdale home invasion: 2 'persons of interest' identified

Police have identified two Minneapolis men as "persons of interest" in the Robbinsdale home invasion during which a 28-year-old man was shot to death on New Year's Day.

Lots of coincidences, but no proof. The cell phone was in the area, a similar car was in a neighbor's security video, the 'persons of interest' are self-identified thugs, and both have a history with the police. I hope they can ratchet this up to proof and take these guys off the street. Sometimes, I think it's a shame that capital punishment doesn't happen in Minnesota.

The question I have is: Is there a point to announcing 'persons of interest' with enough detail that the thugs will recognize themselves? Are they trying to scare the thugs, or warn them? Wouldn't it be better to gather the proof and arrest them before they get a chance to leave town? Or, are they hoping other people will recognize the thugs and connect them to the crime?

I don't know, I'm not a police investigator. I'm just wondering.

This part gives me chills: "The victim replied 'Only over my body'". Good for him.

If you refuse to follow a thug's script, you stand a good chance of getting out of the encounter completely. Nothing good can come from allowing a thug into your home.

Both of these get included in the count because they would be full-fledged home invasions if either of the victims had reacted differently. They both fall under the scope of this site.

Man [Felon] Shoots Intruder in Grant Valley Township

This one's a few weeks old. A man, who apparently is a convicted felon, claims to have shot an intruder.

Prosecutors in northwestern Minnesota have filed weapons charges against a convicted felon who told police he shot and killed an intruder.

Prosecutors say 32-year-old Curtis James Thompson was charged during the investigation into the death of 27-year-old Dominic Needham of Red Lake at a home outside Bemidji.

Interestingly, felons are not allowed to own firearms.* Hence, the weapons charge. But, if you can suspend the notion that gun = bad and also realize that a convicted felon isn't necessarily a violent criminal, then you can wonder, what if Curtis Thompson was legitimately protecting himself against a violent attack from Dominic Needham? I don't know what Thompson's past offenses are and whether or not he's on probation, but if he's served his time, "payed his debt to society," mightn't he be entitled to defend himself and his home with a gun? Just wondering.

* Supposedly, a felon can petition the state and or ATF to restore their rights to own firearms but, apparently, in practice it never happens.

Robbed and locked in trunk, North Minneapolis man feared death

While note technically a home invasion, the fact that it happened in the victim's driveway is close enough to be included here.

Ganley...had a few beers with a buddy after work and arrived home...just before 8:30. p.m.

He turned down his alley and pulled into his drive.

Two unfamiliar men driving down the alley caught his eye. They backed up behind his truck and got out, acting strange.

One of the men asked for directions "and said he was drunk," Ganley said. "Then he pulled out a gun."

Most of the time, the alley serves as the driveway, as it does in this case. Ganley got home, and was carjacked and kidnapped in his driveway.

No more than five minutes later, he sensed that he had been abandoned. "I waited a couple of minutes, then started beating on the trunk lid." He used a belt buckle to beat on the latch trying to get it to pop open, spinning around on his knees and back. He was dressed warmly, but had no gloves. "I was beyond mad," he said.

The lesson: if you see suspicious people around your house, always leave yourself a way to get away, or leave and come back later.

Take Immediate Action

If you're concerned about what you can do right now, take a screwdriver and switch your bedroom latch set with the locking one from your bathroom. It's not much, but it's better than nothing. In the morning, call a locksmith and have him install a deadbolt on your bedroom door as well as the other locks mentioned below.

A second thing you can do right now is to put your car keys beside your bed. If you hear a noise outside your home or hear someone trying to get into your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies. [Hat tip to Peter Kristjansen at Safe-T-Vue for this.]

Another tip: Put your cell phone charger in your bedroom. If a thug cuts your phone line, you'll still be able to call the police.

Robbinsdale police investigating armed assault

Robbinsdale Police are investigating an alleged armed aggravated assault Jan. 13 in an apartment on the 4000 block of 37th Avenue.

The account:

At about 8:35 p.m., the man went to open his door for his girlfriend. As she entered, two men pushed their way into the apartment and rushed him, pushing him into a closet.

The intruders threatened the man with a gun, and then took his antique BB gun. During the fight, a third man entered the apartment.

Thankfully:

Neither the man nor his girlfriend reported injuries. They said they did not know the intruders. Nothing else was stolen and no shots were fired.

I don't know how to avoid this one. The girlfriend couldn't stay out in the hallway with the thugs. If she saw them, she could have warned her boyfriend, but unless he was armed, there wasn't much he could have done.

Four-minute brawl, then four shots

I had seen this story before, but it appeared to be a cold burglary, not a home invasion, as seen here and here.

At about 11:45 p.m., Vosburgh, who lived in a downstairs apartment on Grove Street, walked upstairs to an apartment rented by three young women, went in the unlocked door and to a bedroom where he began scattering items.

One of the women was home, watching TV in her bedroom and did not hear Vosburgh. Vosburgh, who was naked, then went to her bedroom, opened the door and pushed her to the ground, straddling her and saying he was going to pull her pants off and sexually assault her.

Lock your doors, please.

The women reported Vosburgh came toward them, backing them into the living room. He was fondling his genitals and shouting sexual remarks at them.

Vosburgh punched both women, pounded their heads on the floor and dragged one woman by the leg as she tried to escape.

Ladies, a man physically assaulting you can usually be considered lethal force.

osburgh pulled the two Taser probes out of his chest and then attacked officer Blackstock with the piece of metal and pushed the officer down several stairs.

Vosburgh then backed Ellis and Gray up to the living room wall. Both officers had drawn their service handguns and Ellis shot four times, hitting Vosburgh in the chest. Huettl said it is not yet known how many of the shots hit Vosburgh, who died at the scene.

The less-than-lethal device had no effect. This violent, predatory thug's attack was ended with the judicious use of gunfire, as opposed to cooperation or meek submission.

There was some debate about whether or not to include this story. It IS a home invasion story and it is NOT a case of criminal retribution.

When the escort arrived at his Minneapolis home, she didn't look like the woman in the picture that was listed with the on-line ad. Phillip says he opened the door anyway.

"I just saw flashes of people and faces and getting punched in the face," says Phillip.

According to police, at least four men rushed into Phillip's home. He was beaten to the point of needing 15 stitches. He also had two black eyes and a perforated ear drum. The burglars made off with his things.

Giving a stranger your address and inviting said stranger into your house is a risky activity. Hiring a prostitute is a high-risk activity. The victims in this story could have avoided becoming victims by obeying the law.

However, the lesson in this story applies to everyone purchasing items using any form of classified ad. You are giving your address to a stranger and inviting said stranger into your home. Take precautions. If you are selling a plasma TV online, the person coming over knows you probably have nice stuff worth robbing. Be careful.

This isn't an isolated incident.

Police say Phillip's story is one of five similar cases reported in Minneapolis in the last month of men becoming crime victims through craigslist. In two of the cases, the men arranged to meet the woman at an apartment in North Minneapolis. When they got there, they were assaulted and robbed by two men. Police say they have not made any arrests yet in any of the robbery and assault cases.

That's three home invasions and two ambush robberies in the last month. The story doesn't explicitly state it, but it definitely implies that all five were prostitution-related.

And finally, advice from the police that applies to everyone.

"If you're going to meet someone on craigslist meet them in a public place for the first time. Don't invite people to your house. Don't tell them where you live. Don't go to an unknown neighborhood and try to meet up with someone. Be a little bit careful. Use common sense."

Armed Home Invasion

An armed home invasion has ended with the arrests of four teens with police looking for a fifth.

According to the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office it happened at around 8:40 Sunday night, when four people forced their way into a mobile home in Dover and then used a shotgun to force the people inside to the ground.

All of the thugs are rural teenagers. Hardly the stereotype. Bad things can happen anywhere and bad guys don't wear a uniform.

The driver gave the names of his 3 partners.

All are 18 and younger. The four face charges of burglary, assault and terroristic threats.

The two men roughed up the wife of Jamis Marks and his friend, striking both on the head.

From the article:

Another chilling account from that night is the 911 phone call where Jamis Marks' wife tells a dispatcher, "Something is happening, I think my husband is dead. I hear him moaning. I hear him moaning. Please, please hurry."

On Jamis Marks' MySpace page a friend describes what he did by writing, "thank you for saving everyone's life that night. You are truly a hero. I will NEVER EVER forget you or what you have done for me in giving me a second chance at life."

Police: Man Shot, Killed During Home Invasion

They're starting early this year.

A man died early Tuesday morning after a home invasion in Robbinsdale, Minn., police said.

I'm interested in the rest of the story. There's got to be a way to make this not 'random'.

Officers were called to a house on the 2700 block of York Avenue North around 2:45 a.m. When officers arrived, they found four victims of a home invasion.

The first invasion of the year, and it comes with a murder.

One of the victims had been shot. He was taken to North Memorial Medical Center where he died.

Two suspects? Can we have descriptions, please?

The Robbinsdale Police Department and the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office are looking for two suspects. Anyone with information is asked to call 763-531-1220.
